Activ8 Circuit
We had 2 full days where all the classes rotated through the gym each day (for 20 minutes). When each class got to the gym, the age appropriate (primary, junior, intermediate) circuit was set up. They happily rotated through 7 of the 8 stations to a timed CD set up in the CD player. I was most pleased to see that the children remembered what we did last year and were excited to do it again!

Activ8 is heart healthy
I teach Physed and incorporated active 8 challenge into our Physed program. We used certain activities as warm-up (Challenge # 7 and # 8) and used other activites (Challenge # 4 and # 2) to incorporate skill development. The challenge gave us some different ways to become a heart healthier school. I modified challenge # 2, Fabulous Footwork, by having students walk then jog the course with a ball in their hands first. Then I had them dribble with their hands as we were in basketball season. Then I did the same for soccer. I would begin with a warm up of walking/jogging with the ball in hand, then dribbling with the ball at feet to develop the skill of soccer dribbling.

Activ8 was motivating
By participating in the 2008 activ8 challenge contest, my classmates and I improved our fitness skills weekly with moderate increase in the challenges. Also, the variety of activities kept the students motivated. Due to limited gym time each day it was hard to do the complete activity, but the activities were layed out so nicely, that it was easy to modify them.

DPA carts
Jan. 9th was our kick-off date for starting up our DPA (daily physical activity) carts. Each grade level has one and they are shared amongst classes. On each cart there are a variety of DPA games/activities that can be played in the classroom/hallway. Teachers have been inserviced in the over 20 activities and the equipment lends itself to many more innovative games that teachers and students are encouraged to create, write about and include in their DPA duotangs so that they may be shared with other classes.

Fun for everyone!
My Split grade class has students whose abilities range from awkward to go-getter. I picked my Activ8 Challenges from all three junior grade level lessons. My emphasis was on lots of physical activity above skill development. My class enjoyed the warm-ups especially Triangle Tag, Leader of the Pack, Blob tag and Dragon's Tail. Several times the warm-up was the entire 20 minute DPA as the students were having so much fun. Success is watching a young girl who hated gym class, new participating on a regular basis, smiling and out of breath.

Quality Daily Physical Education at Thousand Islands Elementary
We are a new school with a pop. of over 500 students. The initiative at our school has been to introduce quality daily physical education (QDPE) into every classroom this year. Each class tries very hard to have a daily physical activity period of at least 10 minutes. Some days it is done school-wide over the PA system and on other days it is done independently in the classrooms. Some of it is even done to spelling lists or time tables. Most assemblies end with a QDPE activity involving all students and staff. We are working out and we're enjoying it!

Shaw Public School Activ8 Challenge
Over the past few months, Shaw Public School has been engaging in a variety of activities and challenges from Ophea's Activ8 program. It is a program that helps students in the development of skills while having lots of fun. The activities are age-appropriate, motivating and promotes positive attitudes. In this program, there are lead up activities and have eight challenges. The students look forward to coming to gym classes hoping for the next challenge. Some of the activities and challenges were done with modifications being suggested by the studens themselves. Most challenges were done more than once since the students enjoyed them so much. Music was also played during the activities and challenges which made the students more excited.
Kindergarten- Challenge #2- Rainbow Toss
The Kindergarten students had lots of fun with this challenge. They tossed Bean bags, frisbees, foam balls and other materials from 1 metre away and then moved further back to 1.5 metres. They tossed the various materials using underhand. Many students faced challenges in hitting the target. This was quite a learning experience for the Kindergarten students. Many learned their colours, shapes, right and left hand and the skill development of the underhand.
Grade One- Challenge # 2- Fancy Feet
Grade one students enjoyed the challenge of dribbling a ball towards a net within a distance and kicking it into the net. The part that they really enjoyed was when they got to shoot the ball into the soccer net. It's amazing how well they dribbled the ball down the gym then scored. This activity demonstrated amny skills, such as gross motor skill in dribbling, stopping and kicking the soccer ball. The faces on these students were filled with excitement and anticipation.
Grade Two- Challenge # 3- Beanbag Body Balance
Students in Grade 2 enjoyed this challenge of balancing a beanbag on their abdomen while crab walking for a certain distance. The students had so much fun with this activity that they all wanted to do it again and again. they came up with other ways to carry a beanbag while crab walking. They used their necks and thighs. Some even tried it on their heads and noses. they also wanted to have relay races with this challenge. This activity required a lot of endurance and strength.
