$1000 Contest Winners
In December, we received the activ8 Across Canada contest flyer. Since many of our classes have been using the activ8 program we submitted our entry form for a chance to win $1000 in Wintergreen gift certificates. In early, January we received the great news that we were going on a big shopping spree! Thank you from Eastend School in Saskatchewan :)

A Few Activ8 Stories
We were studying Basketball and it was simple to add the grade 5 "Dribbling Dynamo". It was different and stimulating! I believe the students will remember how motivated they were to have fun with new activities and wanting to win prizes for all students! As a teacher I enjoyed the "pre-made" lessons. The students enjoyed learning new activities.

activ8 Celebration Day
Our school was selected to host an activ8 celebratory event because we were using the activ8 program. We held two assemblies and gave students and teachers the opportunities to create and lead activ8 activities.

Activ8 Challenge
I have been very impressed by the form of the Activ8 resource last summer and ordered booklets at the beginning of this school year. In the gymnasium, we still have Activ8 posters for each class and students refer to them as we went through challenges. Our excitement about doing the Activ8 challenges gained the attention of the whole school community. So, I shared the resources with other teachers interested in implementing the program. The greatest benefit from the program that I observed was a child's feeling of having the ownership over putting the effort into a particular activity was very important motivational driving force, as it was not directly linked to their athletic skill level. We also plan to start our challenge skip across Canada using the maps from the Activ8 challenge. Another significant benefit I have noticed was having the Activ8 posters in the gym, aside from being a great visual of progress it also helped to keep low desire for competition and encourage participation by having assessment focused on effort and participation.

activ8 Challenge Contest
The activ8 Challenge Contest was run throughout the school with a total of 95 students who participated. "We love the program and so do the kids. We teach the challenges every winter indoors so taht the students can apply/adapt these fun activities in the school yard in the Spring/Fall."

activ8 Challenge Contest
I implemented the activ8 contest by setting up a circuit. I used the grade 6 Challenge Cards for all 5 of my junior phys-ed classes (it saved a lot of time, and I got them all moving as soon as they entered the gym). My students are very familiar with moving through circuits, so this worked very well! The greatest benefit that I observed was that everyone was good at something! The children were excited to tell me of their successes at their favorite stations.

Activ8 Circuit
We had 2 full days where all the classes rotated through the gym each day (for 20 minutes). When each class got to the gym, the age appropriate (primary, junior, intermediate) circuit was set up. They happily rotated through 7 of the 8 stations to a timed CD set up in the CD player. I was most pleased to see that the children remembered what we did last year and were excited to do it again!

Activ8 is heart healthy
I teach Physed and incorporated active 8 challenge into our Physed program. We used certain activities as warm-up (Challenge # 7 and # 8) and used other activites (Challenge # 4 and # 2) to incorporate skill development. The challenge gave us some different ways to become a heart healthier school. I modified challenge # 2, Fabulous Footwork, by having students walk then jog the course with a ball in their hands first. Then I had them dribble with their hands as we were in basketball season. Then I did the same for soccer. I would begin with a warm up of walking/jogging with the ball in hand, then dribbling with the ball at feet to develop the skill of soccer dribbling.

activ8 Launch Event
Premier Dalton McGuinty helped launch the activ8 program at St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School in Mississauga. The Premier along with other politicians joined us in our morning workout lead by grade eight students followed by activ8 activities. Our school was profiled on City TV, featured in the Toronto Star and gained the attention of our entire community for the healthy living initiatives we are bringing to the St. Vincent students.

Activ8 was motivating
By participating in the 2008 activ8 challenge contest, my classmates and I improved our fitness skills weekly with moderate increase in the challenges. Also, the variety of activities kept the students motivated. Due to limited gym time each day it was hard to do the complete activity, but the activities were layed out so nicely, that it was easy to modify them.
